A Sixth!

Since being limited to 5 things that I believe the third sector should be focusing on it has been playing on my mind that I wasn’t able to make it six. So now I am going to! The sixth target is not something that will necessarily generate direct benefit for the charity itself, but it is an area in which charities should be leading the way. It is, of course, environmental responsibility. How can a charity honestly argue that it is working to make the world a better place if it has an oversized carbon footprint?
Well that would really depend on how much of an influence you believe carbon to be. I advocate using resources efficiently, but am concerned that the over emphasis on carbon will lead to side effects. This brings us to environmental debates though, and much debate is stifled. If the problem really is that we are producing too much CO2, why don’t we actually get out and plant trees, - or better yet phytoplankton, instead of telling people to ‘drive less’. My car produces less CO2 than many others, but probably more Sulphur Dioxide - and that’s a nasty byproduct in my view.
Having said that I think charities should (and do) recycle and reuse and make efficient use of limited natural resources.
Thank you for your comment and I agree that to focus solely on carbon can be a diversion from the aim of using all resources efficiently.
