Do you read the small print??

Back to my gripe about the number of organisations making money out of the generosity of charity donors. The area that seems to be expanding most quickly is the on-line giving medium. Not only are there a host of sites where you can give to charities, but there are also ones where you can set up your wedding/birthday/anniversary list. At first I was puzzled why it was only the larger charities that were involved with these ventures, and none of the smaller ones had taken advantage of such fantastic opportunities to increase their revenue…..and then I read the (impressively hard to find) small print. Not only are charities often charged to set up on these sites (making them beyond the reach of the smaller organisations) but on top of that, they are then charged commission on all donations they receive. This can be as high as 12%!! I even found one that then ALSO charged donors 20%. That is one fat middleman.
